Roslindale Walkable Film Series – Fall 2018 Edition – Starts September 6 with “Don’t Think Twice”

We’ve done a couple of rounds of film series with various venues in and around the square with varied success. But this upcoming series feels like the eagle may have landed!

Accordingly, we are proud to announce that we are partnering with our new friends and neighbors at ComedySportz Boston and The Rozzie Square Theater to hold a series of films on the first Thursday of the months of September, October, November, and December.

First up will be, perhaps not surprisingly, “Don’t Think Twice,” a movie about improv comedy in a venue primarily devoted to improv comedy! Suggested donation is $5 to help defray the cost of having the theater open for us and all net proceeds will benefit our friends at RVMS. We hope you’ll be able to join us, but don’t be late – The Rozzie Square Theater is an intimate venue with a capacity of 49 seats and we’ll be on a first come, first seated basis!!!

Our friends at Streetfilms offer The Right to Walk for your viewing pleasure. It’s 4:53 of to-the-point, quick-hit, smart thinking about why walking is so critical to every city’s health. And is also does make me wonder what percentage of the total transportation budget in our own city of Boston is devoted to walking, cycling, and transit?

Roslindale Film Series – Fall 2017 Edition – October 19 and 30

Third Rail may not be coming to the Substation, but the Roslindale Film Series most definitely is. RVMS just announced that there will be 2 classics on offer in the Substation in October — first, on Thursday, October 19 at 7 pm, they will be showing the technicolor pioneer The Wizard of Oz, and then, second, on Monday, October 30 at 7 pm, we will have Ghostbusters in all of its mid-1980s ironic absurdity.

WalkUP Roslindale has long supported showing feature-length movies in the square and we are excited about this most recent development. We urge everyone to attend and to walk, cycle, or take transit to get there as parking is limited! But bring your own seating and refreshments!

Join the Roslindale Film Series next Saturday, April 8, 2017, 6:30pm, at the Roslindale Community Church (25 Cummins Highway) for the next installment in the Resilience & Resistance series: five films exploring authoritianism, nationalism, and attacks on core democratic principles. We’ll be watching Citizen Kane, the third in the series:

“Citizen Kane” (Dir. Orson Welles, 1941)
Considered a masterpiece of world cinema (as well as Donald Trump’s “favorite film”), Orson Welles wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this fictionalized account of media tycoon
William Randolph Hearst.

Suggested donation is $5, to benefit the Roslindale Food Pantry.

This Changes Everything
This Changes Everything
Wrapping up our six film run, the final presentation will be This Changes Everything, this time sponsored by GreeningRozzie. The movie was inspired by Naomi Klein’s book of the same name. Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.

The film will be shown at the Roslindale Community Center at 6 Cummins Highway, starting at 2pm this Saturday, May 7, 2016. Discussion to follow. Hope to see you there!

We’re now ready for the fifth installment in The Roslindale Village (Walkable) Film Series. Next up is The Thread, a film by Greg Barker that documents the role of social media in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The film was described by the Boston Globe as a “brisk, stimulating documentary,” and runs only about an hour.

We’re now ready for the fourth installment in The Roslindale Village (Walkable) Film Series. Next up is Burning Greed: Arson, Profit and Murder in the Fenway. This film is about greed, corruption, and the brave group of community activists determined to save their neighborhood and themselves..

We’re now ready for the third installment in The Roslindale Village (Walkable) Film Series. Next up is Making a Killing: Guns, Greed, and the NRA. This film tells the stories of how guns, and the billions made off of them, affect the lives of everyday Americans. It features personal stories from people across the country who have been affected by gun violence, including survivors and victims’ families. The film exposes how the powerful gun companies and the NRA are resisting responsible legislation for the sake of profit – and thereby putting people in danger.

How did the Roslindale Village (Walkable) Film Series come to be and what is your particular role in it?

Steve Gag — what a guy. I had hiked with him and my father last summer and had expressed interest in trying to create a Roslindale film society, or something similar. Meanwhile, Adam Kessel and Matt Lawlor of WalkUP-Roslindale, had spoken with Steve about doing some sort of “walkable” or walking-inspired series of films. Steve and Laura Gang had hosted films at their home in the past, and, being such amazing organizers and community members, put the two ideas together and started talking to groups and business owners to try and make it happen. And a fine job they have both done! My particular role has been curation (coming up with movies and networking with the filmmakers/producers for access), poster design, and I will be moderating the series. Andy Cross, an old friend, has done a great work inventing surreal sketches and art for each individual film.

We still have four Boston-themed films remaining in our pilot run; RSVP if you’re interested, and stay tuned for more news this summer.

We’re now ready for the next installment in The Roslindale Village (Walkable) Film Series. Next up is The Friends of Eddie Coyle,  a classic Boston gangster film starring Robert Mitchum and based on a novel by George V. Higgins. The movie was shot throughout the Boston area, including in Dedham, Cambridge, Milton, Quincy, Sharon, Somerville, Malden, and Weymouth.

The free screening will be at a private residence (details provided upon RSVP) on Thursday, March 17, at 6:30pm. Runtime is about an hour forty minutes.
