WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative – Version 8.3 – This is NOT a drill…

The Boston Yeti is back at it again! Photo Credit: abc15 (27 Jan 2015).

Looking ahead to when this storm moves on sometime tomorrow, we can see that it’s already a legitimately major winter weather event with snowfall already more than double our benchmark of 4″ (10 cm), with a solid week of forecasted cold temperatures to follow that will ensure that whatever we ultimately get does not melt quickly. The last several winters have been relatively warm and snow-free, so snow clearance efforts have understandably been at a much lower level of intensity and participation. In contrast, we here at WURSCC HQ are afraid this storm will require all of us to dig deep (pun intended!) and do everything we can to target extra snow clearance efforts at key locations all across Roslindale. Each of us knows our part of the neighborhood and where the worst pinch points are likely to be found after a major snowfall, so once the snow lets up, let’s take care of our neighbors by digging them out and providing safe paths of travel wherever and whenever we can. Once we’re through the initial effort, it is likely that we will post again regarding major projects that might require more of a group effort. As always, anyone sending in a before-and-after set of pictures of a curb ramp, bus stop, or stretch of sidewalk or bike lane they’ve cleared will receive a $10 reward as a small expression of our deepest thanks (note: spending of these funds at a neighborhood business of your choice strongly encouraged). Be well everyone!

WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative – Version 8.1 – Assemble & Clear!

It’s a close call on whether we have hit the standard 4″ (10 cm) threshold, but we will err on the side of safety and assistance, so we are joining our old friend the Boston Yeti and calling our forces out onto the snowy streets this morning to clear bus stops and curb ramps for our neighbors. As has been the case, if you send us pix of the clearing you’ve done, we will send you back $10 as a reward (which we hope you will spend at one of our neighborhood’s many and varied merchants) and heartfelt thank you. Send pix to matthew.j.lawlor@gmail.com. Thanks!!!

Here we go again: Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative Version 7.4 (UPDATE with Photos)

Boston Yeti Takes to the Streets during Winter Storm Marcus ...

Lather, rinse, repeat. Our old, but fairly familiar this winter friend the Boston Yeti is calling us out for the fourth time this season! The reported snowfall before the rain came is in the range of 4-6″ (10-15 cm) and therefore exceeds our 4″ (10 cm) threshold. Accordingly, we are again calling our forces out onto the snowy streets to clear bus stops, curb ramps, and key sidewalk segments for our neighbors. As has been the case for many years now, if you send us pix of the clearing you’ve done, we will send you back $10 in Rozzie Bucks as a reward and heartfelt thank you. Send pix to info@walkuproslindale.org. Thanks!!!

UPDATE: One of our neighbors just sent in the following photos upon clearing the storm drain at the intersection of Belgrade and Aldrich and indicated that a “satisfying whoosh” greeted the finish product as the water that had pooled was allowed to drain. Thanks!!

UPDATE – Insufficient snow fall – STAND DOWN – WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative – v. 6.1 ON ALERT

UPDATE: The snow came late and it did make things look wintry (finally), but it’s definitely below 4″ (10 cm) here at WUR Snow Clearance Collaborative HQ, so we will not be officially calling out our forces. Still, it looks like we have something like 3″ (7.5 cm), so help out your neighbors if you see some trouble spots that require clearing. Thanks all!

Well, the forecasters and our old friend the Boston Yeti (who hasn’t been seen in these parts since early 2022) indicate that we may well have clearable snow (i.e., 4″ (10 cm) or more of the white stuff) with the coastal storm that is anticipated to start late tonight and last most of the day tomorrow. Accordingly, we are putting our snow collaborative forces ON ALERT and asking that everyone who can, please be ready to pick up a shovel and safely, calmly, and with maximum dignity clear out a bus stop, a curb ramp, or a critical pedestrian or cycle path wherever in Roslindale they may be, then send us a picture of the dug out location(s) at matthew.j.lawlor@gmail.com, and we’ll be happy to give you our deepest thanks and work with our friends at Roslindale Village Main Street to get you a $10 coupon to the Roslindale Square business of your choice. Thanks everybody and stay tuned!

The Boston Yeti: Social media sensation returns as area is struck by ...

WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative – Version 5.2

If the forecasters are even half right, tomorrow looks like a doozy around here, so we’re making the call now for all WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative forces to be out, in force, shoveling bus stops and crosswalk curb ramps to help everyone get around more easily after the storm. As a refresher, we now have a fully distributed model where everyone in Roslindale is their own block captain with full power and authority vested in them by WalkUP Roslindale to clear their local crosswalk curb ramp and dig out their nearby bus stop, snapping pictures before and after and sending them to yours truly at matthew.j.lawlor@gmail.com, to claim $10 in Rozzie Bucks from our good friends at Roslindale Village Main Street. Stay safe, stay warm, and we’ll see you out shoveling after the storm. (Yes, that is our old friend the Boston Yeti, looking to make a comeback again this year!)

EXAMPLE ADDED: WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative – Version 4.1 (Virtually, Socially Distanced Yours)

Boston Yeti' spotted shoveling snow has become an online sensation

Friends, our good buddy Boston Yeti is telling us that we may have some significant snowfall overnight tonight and so, once the snow has stopped flying, we are calling out all of our WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative Version 4.1 forces in a virtual, socially distanced way to don a face covering, pickup a shovel, and safely and calmly dig out a bus stop or two wherever in Roslindale they may be, then send us a picture of the dug out stop(s) at mlawlor@rc.com, and we’ll be happy to give you kudos and, possibly, a reward if we can work out the details with a key provider of certain discount coupons for neighborhood businesses. Thanks!

As an example, below are photos of the before and after for a bus stop access point that your correspondent shoveled out late yesterday at South & Walter. Would love to post photos from others on their efforts! – mjl

WalkUP Roslindale Snow Clearance Collaborative Version 1.5 – It may well happen!

Friends, based on Boston Yeti’s latest observed movements, it looks like we will be called once more to rise up and clear snow for our neighbors come Thursday morning. Stay tuned here for more details as the storm event unfolds in the next 24+ hours. In the meantime, be safe and keep on keeping on, just like the Yeti.

Yours truly, The WUR Management.
