Regardless of how else we get around,\u00a0<strong>everyone<\/strong> walks (or, similarly, uses a wheelchair). We envision Roslindale as a safe, pleasant, and beautiful place to walk, gather, and interact, for the young, old, and everyone in between. The\u00a0approach to improving the human environment is comprehensive and holistic: development, design, infrastructure, culture, social norms, and law enforcement. Although our starting point is people on their feet, we will work with allies to\u00a0improve the neighborhood for bikes, other non-motorized forms of transportation, as well as mass transit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkuproslindale.org\/weblog\/2015\/09\/30\/walkup-roslindales-mission-and-seven-statements-of-principle\/\">Check out our Mission and and Seven Statements of Principles, first published 9\/30\/15<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"http:\/\/walkuproslindale.org\/supporter.html\">sign up as a &#8220;supporter&#8221;<\/a>; this just shows you believe in our mission. Any\u00a0information you provide will be kept confidential and you will receive, at most, infrequent emails, and you can unsubscribe at any time.<\/p>\n<p>You can also <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.bostoncoop.net\/mailman\/listinfo\/walkuproslindale\/\">join our private email discussion list<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/walkuprozzie\">follow us on Twitter<\/a>, and\/or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/walkuproslindale\">join us on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u00a0group&#8217;s name in inspired by a\u00a0set of studies about the value attached to &#8220;Walkable Urban Places&#8221; or &#8220;WalkUPs.&#8221; To paraphrase <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartgrowthamerica.org\/locus\/walkup-boston\">Leinberger&#8217;s March 2015 report on WalkUPs in the Boston region<\/a>, a &#8220;Walkable Urban Place&#8221;\u00a0is a place characterized by<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relatively high intensity of development with<\/li>\n<li>Multiple and vertically\/horizontally mixed\u00a0uses (housing, office, retail, recreation, education, etc.) located in close proximity to one another,<\/li>\n<li>Employing multiple modes of transportation (walking, bicycling, transit, and automobiles) that get people and goods to the place, and<\/li>\n<li>Walkability once you&#8217;re there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, Roslindale Square and the neighborhood that surrounds it.<\/p>\n<p>Between the Walsh Administration&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofboston.gov\/news\/default.aspx?id=20044\">Vision Zero project<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofboston.gov\/dnd\/pdfs\/boston2030\/Housing_A_Changing_City-Boston_2030_full_plan.pdf\">its\u00a0recent housing report predicting 70,000 new residents needing 53,000 new housing units of all kinds by 2030<\/a> and the increasing concentration of new development of all kinds in WalkUPs that Leinberger is forecasting, we are going to see real growth and significant development pressure in Roslindale in the next decade and a half.<\/p>\n<p>WalkUP Roslindale seeks to be a gathering\u00a0place\u00a0for those who welcome\u00a0this new wave of development\u00a0but\u00a0know that\u00a0it has to be done right so that our neighborhood becomes even more livable.
